I am a first year, first grade teacher and I am so ecstatic to be teaching at one of the top community schools in New Mexico! My students inspire me each and every day! I believe that the best way for students to learn is through hands-on experiences!
My students have piqued interest in just about EVERYTHING!
I am inspired by their questions and honored to help them find answers. Our new language arts unit focuses on using informational text and finding main ideas and supporting details. I find that the curriculum is not always engaging for them and I would like to create a unit about something they are deeply interested in. Children are most likely to find answers to their own questions. We recently saw a picture of a mummy and right away my students were excitedly sharing prior knowledge about ancient Egypt. We went from mummies, to pyramids, to the Great Sphinx in our conversation that day! It really shocked me how much they knew and how excited they were about this topic. I then thought to myself, why not create a unit centered around Ancient Egypt and research the topic together? It will be a more engaging and enriching experience for my students and something I hope they will remember.
My Project
I believe in project based learning focused on topics of interest to my students. As a first year teacher, in a district with never-ending budget cuts, it is difficult to obtain meaningful materials to support experiential, project-based learning. This grant will bring my students resources for research on mummies, pyramids, pharaohs, King Tut, and Egypt for us to use in authentic research. As a class, we'll find answers to their very own questions. I've also included hands-on kits that multiple students can use to discover new information in a hands-on way. This modeling of the scientific process of excavation and mummification will turn my students into experts! I hope that this will inspire them to feel like real little archaeologists.
You are changing the world by helping to fund public education.
As a first year teacher, I am so grateful and excited to have the help of citizen philanthropists. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for showing us love and generosity. We are inspired by your kindness. I can't wait to upload photos of my little archaeologists in action!!!
