My Students
Every day I teach and learn from a group of middle school children with moderate to severe disabilities that thrive at school. The special needs of children with autism can be helped with specialty products that help them with their various sensory needs. The school and the families/caregivers of my students want more for their children than just surviving at school, they want them to grow and learn and contribute to society. Which is why we work hard to create a special day class with a rich academic environment, community and global understanding and a social outlet. I have learned I must reach out for support and guidance from a variety of sources to accomplish all of these goals for the students.
My Project
My students will thrive when they get to see and touch a book instead of looking and hearing.
When a student's brain processes information differently, a teacher needs to use alternate ways to reach them.
Stories that include colorful material, that can be manipulated and touched, enable students with ASD to make connections and engage in reading lessons. Teaching in a public school is amazing but is limited when trying to use project based teaching to reach students with special needs. Many of the materials created to help these students are not available through the school district and need to be funded by teachers themselves.
