Interactive Science in Fullerton

My students need one iPad to use as an input device during class vocabulary games and for interactive labs and Apple TV.

My Students

Have you seen an episode of Leave it to Beaver lately? A classroom scene in that show probably wouldn't look too different from my classroom today. Because of budget constraints, I have been teaching students mostly with "legacy" equipment purchased long before I came to the school.

My students are a diverse bunch with many coming from affluent areas on the North end of town while others have struggled in less privileged areas in the South.

Our school interestingly is a good representation of California's population as a whole, culturally, racially, and socioeconomically. Our school has strong roots in the community and has a strong reputation for a broad and balanced education. My students love science, and they love it more when it is interactive and hands-on. Being in middle-school, they exhibit a combination of youthful enthusiasm and curiosity and a more mature ability to apply that into complex scientific processes and procedures. My students love to stay in my class even during their break so that they can play with science "toys," many of which are older than me! I would love to be able to offer them more opportunities to learn this way.

My Project

I am requesting a combination of an iPad and Apple TV and accessories so that I can incorporate the iPad into learning science content. I will mostly be using this set-up to project the iPad on the screen so that I can share some of the countless science apps with my students while staying mobile and engaged with students in the class rather than controlling a computer with a desk between me and the students. There are several specific apps that the students would greatly benefit from. For instance, there is an app that shows 3-D models of simple common molecules that bring life in ways that textbook images cannot. Also, there is an interactive periodic table from Nova (PBS) that could really extend student learning in a rotating lab station. Finally, I plan on using the iPad as an input device for students to share answers during class warm-ups and vocabulary games. This is important for achieving our schoolwide goal of expanding our students' content vocabulary.

Most students are turned on or off to science at the middle school level.

Bringing this technology to our class will provide one more opportunity for the students to access science knowledge in new, fun and interactive ways. By appealing to the students in varied ways, we increase the chance that they will consider science as a future career choice and that they will want to fulfill that curiosity when it is no longer compulsory.
