Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The following proposal is not flashy but it is important!
Our school Science department has decided to use interactive notebooks in all of our classes as a key to equitable, rigorous, and standards-based high school Science instruction. Interactive notebooks are an irreplaceable "platform" for acquiring and organizing knowledge, demonstrating iterative learning and metacognition, and engaging in critical inquiry with nonfiction texts. In brief, they efficiently organize and document student engagement in STEM-learning.
Notebooks are individually inexpensive and ubiquitous: why not simply ask households to purchase them for their individual students? When notebooks are left for private purchase, several students miss out and we teachers scramble (and sacrifice) to provide them. We are hoping to begin next year with a notebook to give each student and keep in the classroom to ensure all students have equal access to this fundamental material. When we can issue notebooks to all students, it puts students on an equal footing to start the yearn and allows our staff to move in unison with a curriculum that supports science literacy for all students.
We regularly fundraise from parents in Fall and expect to annually purchase notebooks with fundraised monies thereafter. We are also fundraising from parents this spring to help cover the full cost for these notebooks! But to get our interactive notebook program off the ground, we need your help now. By funding this request we will be able to provide notebooks for each of our students at the beginning of next year (2024-25) and demonstrate proof-of-concept for future parent-fundraising and campus-wide Science interactive notebook implementation.
