Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students automatically get out their interactive notebooks before the bell rings for class because they know we'll be using them that day! I teach chemistry and physics, as well as a middle school science elective course - Jason Project -, and I teach solely through the use of these notebooks.
The students at our campus are very dedicated to their school and school work.
They appreciate learning through a hands-on approach. The small district we are in requires the use of interactive notebooks in all grade levels to further this teaching style. However, I am more than happy to incorporate interactive notebooks when teaching my courses. They keep the students (and myself) better organized and engaged in their learning. Along with labs, there never seems to be a dull moment for them not to be excited about learning science.
My Project
My students are seated in groups of 4. Each table has their own box of materials, and I usually keep extra materials on hand to replenish these boxes. The boxes contain colored pencils/markers, highlighters for notes, tape, glue, scissors, etc., to use when putting print outs and fold-ables in their notebooks. Because of daily use in all my courses, I am in constant need of any of these given materials to replace used ones.
When the students don't have an adequate supply of materials to work in their notebooks, the quality of their work decreases (papers not attached to notebooks, lack of color, etc.).
The students at my school come from low-income families, and the district itself usually does not have disposable funds to spend replenishing the stock of materials - especially for every teacher. Having these interactive notebook materials will be greatly appreciated by both the students and myself.
