As educators, we know the power a book can have, but seeing that power unfold in real time, especially with our newcomer students, was something truly special.\r\n\r\nInvisible immediately resonated with my students. Many of them saw their identities, cultures, and experiences reflected in the story. For students who are new to both English and a new country, finding a book that speaks their language (both literally and figuratively) meant the world. The graphic novel format made it even more engaging. They couldn't put it down! The illustrations helped bridge any language barriers and sparked rich, thoughtful discussions. We talked about friendship, stereotypes, resilience, and what it means to feel seen in a new space.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become more than just a task- it was a source of joy and connection. For many students, this was the first book they truly loved in English. They laughed, shared personal stories, asked deep questions, and most importantly, began to see themselves as readers. Your donation didn't just give us a book- it opened up a space for community, empathy, and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1744220120118,"projectUrl":"project/invisible-empowering-emergent-bilingual/9235210/","projectTitle":"Invisible: Empowering Emergent Bilingual Students Through Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Reyes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9305183"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_29805","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":253,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":91,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":89,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.6,"schoolId":29805,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Discovery Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Discovery Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/texas-department-of-education/southwest-middle-and-high-school/29805"}
