I teach Physics and Chemistry at a high school in Houston, TX. The typical student in our school has had some form of addiction and previously been placed in treatment for that addiction. When they enroll in our school, they have maintained their sobriety for a minimum of sixty days. During their time with us they not only continue work on their recovery but they work to complete their high school education just like in a regular high school. In my entire teaching experience I have never worked with such motivated students. These students bring a refreshing element to my classroom, not only do they continue to work on themselves and their education, they demonstrate qualities that have been lost in so much of our world today. When students leave school, they do not go straight home. A typical afternoon would be attending their APG (Alternative Peer Group); this is similar to a youth group but it is centered on personal growth and their recovery.
