My students need Graph Composition Books for the Interactive Notebooks. We go through a lot of tape, as we create foldables and charts that get put into their notebooks.
I teach in a small rural school in Northern Indiana. I teach five different math classes ranging from Algebra Remediation to Calculus. I have found that through a combination of enthusiasm on my part and active involvement on their part, any student can be successful in my classroom.
Within our small school, all ability levels are grouped together, so I am constantly trying to find ways to reach all of my students individually and give them meaningful feedback.
I teach 4-5 different courses every day, and resources are limited. I want to find a way to provide them with everything they need to be successful.
My Project
This project requests graphing composition notebooks, Scotch tape, and dry erase markers to help them to create an Interactive Notebook to use as a resource for high school and college math classes and allow for a variety of Dry Erase Activities.
For the past three years I have helped my students to create their own Interactive Notebook (INB) in my Algebra, Pre-Calc, and AP Calc classes.
These notebooks are a mixture of traditional notes, foldables, illustrations, and activities. I've found that students have a great sense of ownership having created the notebooks from scratch. It also helps engage the students more fully, since it encourages creativity, has kinesthetic qualities, and provides a math resource that students can keep for use in later courses.
I have had several former students tell me that they used their INB to help them achieve success in their college math classes. I have noticed a great improvement in overall student participation. In addition, students learn to utilize the resource of their notebook, which transfers to an increased use of reference sheets provided on standardized tests.
Dry Erase Activities are a constant in my classroom. It allows for 100% student engagement, easy differentiation, and immediate academic feedback. I find it invaluable to my teaching.
