Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This fall will be my third year teaching fourth grade in a low-income district in Northern California. My class will be comprised of diverse learners, some of who are students with special needs who are fully included and mainstreamed into the general education classroom and 4th grade curriculum. Students who enter fourth grade at my school typically have academic levels ranging from 2nd to 5th grade. Almost all of our students are English Language Learners and qualify for free and reduced lunch. While the work I have done for the past two years is challenging, it is also most rewarding because I have students who truly desire to improve and work hard!

This summer I have been pondering ways that I can personally become a more effective educator and help to close the achievement gap. One content area that I have thought a lot about is math. Over the past two years my students have had a lot of practice with worksheets and math drills but have not experienced math in a highly engaging and exciting way. One positive aspect of next year is that my district has adopted a new math curriculum, Everyday Math, that is very engaging and allows students the opportunity to interact with math in a more meaningful way.

While we have an exciting new curriculum that is chalk full of math games and interactive activities, my district cannot afford all of the manipulatives (geoboards, base ten blocks, polyhedra dice and calculators) that are necessary components of playing these games and having these interactions with math. Because my school does not have the resources it needs, it becomes difficult to keep students interested and engaged. If I am able to obtain the necessary materials, however, I know I will be able to implement our new math curriculum in a way that will get my students truly excited about math.

Your help will ensure that my students have everything they need to thrive in mathematics using our new curriculum. I am requesting that my students have access to the manipulatives that are needed to fully implement the curriculum and engage them in math, which will ultimately deepen their love for the subject and provide them with an extremely solid foundation.
