Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are young adults who are between 18 to 22 years of age but continue to qualify for continued education provided by the District.
They are amazing students who choose to be in the program to obtain crucial skills needed for a successful transition from student of a school district to adult life.
We focus on the following areas: vocational skills, daily living skills, and post-secondary education.
They have a desire to be the best they can be, and we assist in getting them there, whether that be working or volunteering in the community, getting around independently, taking community college classes, etc. We are fortunate enough to have built and maintained relationships in our community to have the students volunteer at many different sites (such as retail, warehouse, etc.) to gain job experience hopefully leading to gainful employment. They also actively practice and train to ride public transportation while some even attend community college to build on remedial skills or take hobby classes.
My Project
When at a conference about a year ago I was introduced to the interactive Promethean ActivPanel. It is a tablet-like surface for the front of the classroom. At first, I was skeptical but then they reeled me in when I was able to play with it. It is amazing! However, the price tag was a little steep. I've always kept the idea in the back of my head but the other day when the students were bummed asking why I can't write on the projection screen, and that they were still confused it reminded me of it. I figured it wouldn't hurt to post it on here to see if we can make it happen. Currently, some students who need to sit close, have the projection light in their face and while for others with behaviors who want to make shadow puppets it is a distraction to all. This would fix all that and more as it is better than a projection screen or even the SmartBoard. It can be moved around the classroom where ever we need it, you can have up to fours students working at once, you can pinch zoom, mirror mobile devices, and more. This would be ideal when looking up public bus routes, filling out job applications, looking up college classes, watching social skills videos, and allow for additional apps we currently aren't able to use.
This panel will enhance the teaching and learning experience providing instant access to educational apps, wireless connectivity, mobile device mirroring and more.
I can only imagine how well it will work with my students.
