This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are K-2 scholars from Washington, DC. They are passionate, creative, imaginative, silly, thoughtful and full of surprises! They absolutely love active, hands-on and engaging projects and activities. My students love to be challenged and discover different ways of solving. Each day that scholars come to school, they are fearless and aspire to grow both personally and academically.
Many scholars in my classroom have difficulty completing assignments and accessing content at home due to a lack of supplies and resources.
Our school is located in the heart of Ward 7, with 26.6% of its residents below the poverty line. This is double the rate of the United States.
Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the ways in which they learn can vary greatly. They are all caring, insightful, brilliant, and an overall incredible group. I am blessed and thankful to have a group of learners that are excited about learning, and every day I feel that I learn just as much from my scholars as they learn from me.
My Project
At my school, there are more than 50 at-risk scholars. These materials will make a significant difference in the learning outcomes for my scholars because they allow for differentiation with a diverse group of learners, thus allowing me to address all the different learning styles students have and allowing scholars to have hands-on and interactive materials in mathematics.
Many scholars find it challenging to understand concepts they can't see or touch.
The materials I am requesting will serve as math manipulatives for scholars. Scholars will use the materials as visual aids and manipulate them in order to solve math problems.
In math, they will use several of the materials (snap cubes, base ten blocks, counters) to master one-to-one correspondence, addition, subtraction, comparing quantities, fractions, and base ten facts. They will use paint for different art projects throughout the school year including the fall festival, winter solstice, New Years, Mother’s Day, Dr.Seuss’ birthday, and spirit week projects. With these projects, students are allowed to get creative and communicate through visual representations.
I want my scholars to feel wonderment when it comes to learning. In order to provide a high quality education, high quality materials are needed.
