My Students

So many fascinating things to learn and so little time! Our class is blessed with 2 students who are native Spanish speakers and the rest of us want to know Spanish, too. Our brief once-a-week Spanish class just doesn't meet our needs.

My first graders are inquisitive English-speaking explorers in a rural school plagued by high poverty.

They are fascinated by Spanish. As with most children of poverty their language arts are below standard. I have found that introducing Spanish vocabulary along with English words makes our studies more interesting and has a higher impact. It also gives our Spanish speaking children a chance to lead and shine.

My Project

"Se habla español aquí!" We speak Spanish here! When we meet on the English/Spanish carpet we will have a focal area for our language learning. The carpet with the illustrated basic vocabulary will support our verbal and written development of Spanish language skills. The picture dictionaries will be available for the children to explore as they discover language according to their interests. The basic language of the Scholastic magazines will give us structured practice and an opportunity to work with the patterns of Spanish sentences in a richly illustrated context. Parents of our Spanish-speaking students have volunteered to assist us with reading the Scholastic magazines.

Integrating Spanish into our daily lessons is important in helping my students not only learn the language but gain a greater appreciation for the many different people they will live and work with in the future.

Integrating Spanish will help me include more of our Spanish-speaking parents in our classroom activities. With your help, we can learn more about language and each other.
