"It is music and dancing that make me at peace with the world!"-Nelson Mandela
There are not enough opportunities in today's classroom for children to be expressive through movement and dance and have the materials needed to do so. I want to afford my students the opportunity to creatively "learn"!
My students are 4th graders, ages 9-10 years old, with an openness to trying new things and discovering themselves along the way.
Fourth grade is a big transitional year for these students as they start to come into their own and begin tapping into new ideas and experiences. Our school is located in southern California, and has parent support that places a firm emphasis on education.
My Project
Movement education to learn Math? Adding dance and music to learn Language Arts? Social Studies? Science? NO WAY! The items I am requesting will be used across the 4th grade curriculum. Getting my students to participate in dance/movement at this age, engages the whole child. Yes... dance IS an art and when used in story telling, poetry reading, learning mathematical concepts, and physical education, appeals to the many learning styles evident in my classroom. I want to get my students up and moving and convinced that it's OK to be expressive when moving.
My students are not "cookie cutter kids"!
They all learn and retain knowledge and information differently. This project is my effort to appeal to the multiple intelligences in my classroom with items that will motivate them to get up and move. The items I am requesting will, no doubt, afford my students the opportunity to tap into a style of learning they may or may not have known they had within them. I owe them the chance to experience ART, DANCE, MUSIC in this way.
