Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in a low income neighborhood in Las Vegas and all of our students come from the surrounding homes and apartments. We are a tight knit little community and a majority of our students walk to school every day.

My students are always excited to learn.

They are curious, intelligent and so much fun to work with. They are capable of anything and deserve every opportunity they can get.

Most of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and many are English language learners.

My Project

An ever growing body of evidence shows that the more arts education students have the better they do in reading, writing and math. The arts are an integral part of a well rounded education and students who have more exposure to them do better in school, like school more, and become less bored than their peers who don't participate in the arts.

My students have art once a week for 50 minutes, but an easel in the classroom would let them do a lot more!

I have the space in my room to create an art center. This four-sided easel would give me the tools to make that art center a reality. I could incorporate more art-based centers into my instruction and give all of my students significantly more time every week creating art.

More and more school time is devoted to testing every year, even my students in kindergarten are required to take six computer-based reading and math tests every year, and as a result many students are losing the opportunity to have a well-rounded education. An art center in my classroom would allow me to give my students the well-rounded education they deserve, that will set them up for more academic success in the future and that will help them develop a love of school and learning.
