I teach a group of twenty-four first grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime in the nation. All students at my school site receive a free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation in the United States. At least 15% of my students are newcomers to the country. School is one of the only places in which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.
Living and attending school in a highly impoverished urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.
Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.
A few summers ago, I took an art course in which the teacher would display our work along with a picture of us in the process of making that piece of art. I found the idea very useful for students to show pride in their work when it's displayed on hallway boards. By adding pictures, the audience gets a better understanding of the process students go through to accomplish a task. This idea is not just useful in art, but also in many other subjects. For example, I often have my students write based on science material that we have covered. Now imagine the camera printing the picture the moment you take it and celebrating students' accomplishments that instant. To do this we need the film for the Fujifilm Instax Camera.
Ideally, the pictures displayed would include students completing the writing and also pictures of students having the hands-on science experience on which their writing is based.
Please give my students the opportunity to be proud of the work they accomplish.
