This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine life without your smart phone, mp3 player, or computer? The only place many of my students have access to technology is in my classroom.

The majority of my students are English language learners from a very impoverished community.

I have several students who speak little to no English and many who do speak English do not have English speaking parents that are able to enrich their learning at home. The learning levels of my students vary from learning sounds to reading chapter books. My students are in need of technology to help them improve their language skills, allow them to work independently and at their own level.

My Project

My goal is to get an iPod touch for the classroom to provide more learning opportunities for my students. After discovering the ease and non-stop enjoyment my toddler gets from playing educational games on our iPod touch, I decided to see if there were any apps that I could use for my students. To my amazement there were a ton of apps ranging from letter sounds, children’s audio books, phonics, sight words, English language and a variety of math applications as well. I brought in my own iPod for the students to use and it is a daily fight over who gets to use it. I have seen growth in my lowest student who went from learning letter sounds to reading simple stories and my high math students have been enriched with the various challenging math games. The most amazing part is that the students are excited to learn! They remain engaged the entire time, they are exposed to technology they do not have access to, and they can work independently while I work with a small group.

Our growing classroom sizes are making it harder and harder to give each child the individualized instruction they need to allow them to make the growth they are truly capable of.

This technology allows many opportunities for growth in a variety of subjects and at all levels.
