Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids are special because they belong to me. Once they entered my class they took over my heart. My heart is filled with sweet, artistic, loud, energetic, kind, and at times a bit dramatic third graders.
Sometimes it's hard to get my kids excited to learn when they come to school sad, hungry or mad at the world.
My kids worry about adult-level life problems. Instead of being exposed to trips to the zoo or a baseball game some of my kids wonder if they have a place to live, food to eat, and clothes that are clean and fit.
My Project
Our classroom has a classroom instagram page. In this account parents see what their children are learning and get notices of our upcoming events. The students are in charge of what is posted.
With Instagram students will use the app to post read alouds, interview each other about the stories they've read and present short new clips discussing current events.
Posting it on the app is not only a lot of fun but effective. Students will be learning about character traits , changes and character relationships with is very helpful when teaching fictional text to third graders. Also producing short new clips about current events will encourage students to research and work on their summary and main idea skills.
I invision students dressing up like a character and have another student interview the character. Students will use the microphones to do short interview clips like on Jay Leno segment Jaywalking where the students ask current event questions or content questions to their classmates. Everything posted will be positive , academic or informative. As a class we will brainstorm on ideas that we want to post online. Some other examples are product review on the latest toy craze, interviewing parents, book or movie reviews.
With the large post it chart paper students will use it to draw the main characters of the story or retell the story with drawings. The cardstock colorful paper will be used as question cards. Its just a fun way to use colorful paper.
Parents will enjoy seeing their children demonstrate what they learned and I'm sure they will repost it on their own instagram accounts.
