Inspiring Writers Through The Formation Of Writing Workshop

My students need writing process folders, materials for writing centers, and basic essentials for the setup of writing workshop.

My Students

Even though my students are in sixth grade, many of them are being held accountable for excellence in writing for the first time in their lives. With the school year starting next week, I am hoping to both inspire and support struggling writers through your support.

My students are from an inner-city charter school in Missouri.

Many students come to my school 2-3 years behind in reading, writing, and math. While we made great progress last year, with students growing on average 2.5 years in one year, many students are still behind. This year I am hoping to get students to grow two more years, putting them above and beyond grade-level.

My Project

Writing Process Folders: Writing process folders will allow students to really understand the process that great writers use for their writing. Students will use these folders for each piece of writing, publishing every three weeks. In addition, all of the materials listed below will all help guide instruction with each individual stage of the writing process: Developing Writing Skills Magnetic Teaching Charts (pre-writing) Improve Your Writing Word Bank Journals (Revising-adding words and Editing-spelling) Writing Process Management Chart (Overall writing process-all steps) Step-by-Step Writing Centers (incorporate all steps of the writing process) Meeting Writing Standards Activity Series (Editing) Tissue paper squares (Publishing) Students will have the opportunity to emerge themselves in the writing process while learning the importance of each stage. They will feel confident in their writing and develop writing stamina.

This request will make a difference because it will be providing resources needed for writers to take their writing abilities to the next level.

These students have worked so hard to improve their writing last year (despite the fact that their previous school experience at other schools failed them for so many years). As a result, they all deserve a learning environment rich with resources that support and inspire.
