My 3rd grade students are enthusiastic and energetic! They have compassion, kindness and integrity. My students come from all walks of life and from different socioeconomic levels. Although they all have different experiences, they need to learn that these differences do not control their futures.
I want my students to see that every single one of them can be successful in life.
The vast majority of the books in my school discuss white, male historical figures. I need more books about strong women and minorities in history to show these great students that anybody can be a role model and race and gender roles cannot define them.
My Project
My classroom needs resources that show strong non-traditional role models. Currently, most of my books show successful and strong men. I want the students in my class to see that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Our true potential is not controlled by our race or our gender.
I need literature to show that strong role models and successful leaders can come from every walk of life.
The books I have chosen are about inspiring leaders and are from the Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People which is supported by the National Counsel for Social Studies. They showcase success from many different eras of history and areas of science.
