My Students

Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art.- A. Adams I want more than iPhone photos in my classroom- In order for my students go to that level we need to use the many settings on a DSLR camera that can take them the next level of photography.

Our high school enrollment is about 425.

My art room is always busy- an average to 250 students per year take an art class; over half of the student body. That doesn't include the students who come in just to create art, which happens every hour of the day. Our school and community is very supportive of the arts- however my budget goes primarily to art supplies- very little left over to go towards purchasing extra equipment. I always want to give my students the best supplies that I can- make them feel like they are in fact artists. All art work is displayed in the hallways and display cases- making the student very invested in their art. However, like many schools in Iowa we are facing declining enrollment which means less funds to use for purchasing and digital camera class is one of the classes I can't afford to buy everything I want to make them successful.

My Project

My digital camera class started off with 10 students- now we have 2-3 per year ranging from 30-50 students. We have a sign up sheet for use of our one DSLR camera and many days I bring in my own cameras from home so my students can really get to take the pictures they want to take. Many of the assignments that I present in class have to be modified for point and shoot cameras or camera phones or lasts days because we are using two cameras. I want the students to understand and be able to control their photos- Not just take snapshots each day, be able to put artistic touches on their photos before Photoshop. All of our photos adventures are put online for the world to see- having these cameras would make the students that much prouder to display their photos. My students will feel in control of their photography.

They will be able to produce better quality photos not just iPhone pictures. Being able to take photos in manual mode will allow them creative freedom and give them endless possibilities when it comes to digital photography. It will also open their eyes to photography and realize they can take photos with a camera and not just a phone.
