I teach ENL in small groups to children in grades 2-4. I teach in a high poverty neighborhood in the Bronx. Many of my students are new to the country or have been here 1-2 years. My students face many obstacles and challenges each day coming to school. Many are living in homeless shelters, foster care, or in a crowded apartment with their relatives. These amazing students overcome these obstacles and come to school with a desire to learn all day every day!
My Project
The items in this project are necessary supplies to help keep students engaged and motivated. Most of my learners are tactile learners, therefore art supplies are necessary to keep assignments interesting. Word sorts are more fun when you can cut and glue them! Learning vowel teams and vocabulary words are more memorable when we create shapes, animals or other items related to the objective! Printing colorful activities and games for reading comprehension can make ink go extremely fast! Ink is a must have! Laminating games and activities helps prolong them for future use. Lastly, young minds need fuel! Little snacks are helpful to keep students moving!
