Inspiring the Architects of Tomorrow

My Students

COVID forced students to engage in distance learning, and this has resulted in a LOT of screen time. Students want hands-on collaborative activities. They want interaction. Many of my students' home life has only added to the problem. Most parents work 2-3 jobs and are rarely home. Over 90% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This has led to an increase of screen time at home. A separate but related issue is that many of my students are refugees from other countries. This often results in communication barriers that are difficult to navigate. I have found that hands-on activities and the act of MAKING something can be rewarding and relieving to students.

I have found that students love to collaborate as they MAKE things.

I want to offer my students a new way to study CTE pathways... in particular - architecture.

My Project

As students work together to first study and then build the structures of tomorrow, they will have the ability to step away from their computers and use their hands. They will no longer be tied to only digital drawings, but they will have the ability to create and manipulate prototypes in 3D.

Digital tools are essential, but with the addition of hands-on manipulatives, students will be able to see their buildings come to life.

It will allow us to have conversations about space, style, and stability, that are otherwise difficult to talk about from a computer screen. It will also allow them collaboration time, and give them a break from the seemingly never-ending computer tasks we often find ourselves engaged in.
