Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For some students, the ability to succeed academically is relevant to their motivation. At our school, we have a structured Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program to help our students remain motivated to achieve their goals in the classroom. We need two couches to keep them interested.

My students are amazing!

Each one is unique in their own way and have so much potential. At such a young age they are forced to deal with such adversity, yet they attend school each and every day. Most of my students are born into poverty-stricken areas of the South Bronx, and a large percentage live in shelters. It is all too common to hear that a single parent, grandparent or foster parent is raising them. Our school is a District 75 Specialized School that services grades K-8. Each student has an Individualized Education Plan to help them succeed. Most of our students have intellectual, adaptive, and emotional disabilities. We provide a plethora of services and a multisensory approach to help students access the curriculum. Our PBIS team has developed a comprehensive system that rewards students for successfully meeting school expectations each day. We teach our students to be safe, take responsibility, have a positive attitude, and respect others in school, on the school bus and in life.

My Project

With a successful week of positive behavior and academic productivity, students can spend one period a week in our school's game room! This has been a huge reward for them, as we have worked hard to create a fun, safe, and friendly environment. The game room is already equipped with board games, video games, pool, ping-pong and Foosball tables to motivate our students to succeed. Currently, the students have to share a limited number of hard uncomfortable school chairs to engage in their reward for positive behavior and success in the classroom. We have found that this is the biggest complaint, and are seeking two comfortable couches to allow our students to truly enjoy and remain motivated to enter the game room. Comfortable seating will allow for an increased emphasis on appropriate social and emotional behavior, pragmatics while allowing them to relax as they enjoy their reward.

Donations to this project will encourage my students, as well as students in the building, to remain motivated to succeed in the classroom and follow our school's expectations for positive behavior.

Comfortable seating will increase the attraction to this engaging reward environment for all students who visit.
