I am inspired every day by my students. They are always excited to come to enrichment class. They are enthusiastic, energetic, and curious about the world around them. Their enthusiasm inspires me to create challenging and thought-provoking lessons. They always want more. I am the gifted specialist in a public school in the mountains of North Carolina. My students come from diverse backgrounds. I teach first through sixth grade in small groups. I presently serve about 120 students throughout the week. My students are always up for a challenge. They thrive on challenging materials, probing questions, and interesting lessons. They amaze me every day with their "out of the box" thinking.
My Project
Have you ever had an opportunity to design, build, and program a robot? Just think how excited you would be if you had this opportunity as an adult. Now think how excited 4th-grade students would feel. That is exactly what our school's 4th graders are experiencing. Presently we have 3 LEGO NXT Mindstorm Robots and three Ev3 Robots. The NXT Robot program is being discontinued. Once these robots break or no longer work, they cannot be replaced. We need to start transitioning to the new Ev3 LEGO Robots to ensure we will be able to continue our robotics program.
Robotics is very popular at our school.
Robotics is also an integral part of our 4th and 5th-grade environmental unit. My students learn to program the robots while learning about alternative energy sources. Students explore concepts in math and science while working together to solve real-world problems. Besides, it is just fun and exciting. Students involved with robotics are introduced to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks.
