Inspiring STEM Students to Study Ecology

My Students

Our school is a new public high school in Gwinnett County, GA. We are a Title I school with a student body of 639, of which 70% qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. Our school is filled with passionate teachers and bright, creative students eager to succeed in computer, engineering and design fields. Science is at the heart of all these fields. Despite being a new school, our students are already ranking at the top of county assessment tests and engaged in advanced curricula and co-curricular science clubs such as Science Fair. Despite any life challenges, most of my students show up eager to succeed. My challenge is to engage these high schoolers!

My Project

I aspire to engage students in the learning process by incorporating educational games. The Ecology-based games will allow students to learn the fundamentals of photosynthesis and food webs. They will engage in a fun way to learning, which is a great way to meet the needs of our students! After playing the games, the goal is for students to construct a written argument that illustrates an understanding of the role of photosynthesis and food webs in ecosystems. Students will also learn how natural and man-made events can affect an ecosystem. These concepts are vital to our Biology curriculum at our high school. The games will be shared with our entire Biology team.
