Inspiring Special Education Students to Have a Reading Life!

My students need 9 book bins for a leveled library.

I teach a special education classroom for students with speech and language disabilities. One of the greatest challenges is exposing them to high quality language through literature. The foundation for student success in high school and college begins at the elementary level. I feel passionately that something must be done to ensure that students are given that foundation in literacy they need to succeed in school and in life.

The students in my class are at a variety of skill levels. When following our school district's curriculum it is very difficult for my students to read the assigned text for their grade level. By providing students with choices, they are able to choose text at their independent reading level and learn strategies through those texts. This has allowed my class to feel successful at all levels. Specifically I have noticed the true impact of this program with a boy in my classroom. He has trouble focusing and is often off task. He never participated during reading time when the text was assigned, probably because it was too hard or simply wasn’t interesting. Since we have begun choosing “just right books” which are at student's individual reading levels as well as of interest to them, he has been soaring. He sits with his books, reading one after the other for the entire duration of reading time. He often doesn't even hear the signal to put books away since he is so highly engaged in the text. He has moved up 3 reading levels in just 2 months and he is truly proud of himself.

My students need multiple copies of books for a leveled library. My school’s current curriculum places an emphasis on phonics rather than finding meaning in text. I feel that there needs to be consistent work with word patterns but real critical thinking skills develop from rich conversations around literature. One of the elements of reading workshop that has been important in improving my student's oral language skills is partner reading. It has helped to build a community of readers that share their interests and get excited about reading. They learn to appreciate each other’s differences and see how other kids learn. The gains I have seen by our students have generalized to other content areas like math, science and social studies.

Students in special education often get marginalized. Providing books and materials at their academic level will offer the opportunity for them to practice skills, develop a life-long passion for reading and support them in meeting grade-level standards.
