Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I am somebody. I was somebody when I came; I'll be a better somebody when I leave." My sixth grade students start each morning by reciting these words and then spend each day proving them to be true.

My students are energetic and active members of their school community.

The majority of my students are living below poverty and are English language learners. They spend their days caring for younger siblings, translating for and assisting parents, and dedicating time to their own academic studies. Like most twelve year olds, they are passionate about building relationships and advancing their futures. However, they often struggle to understand the world beyond their small, low-income neighborhood on Salt Lake City's west side. A major hurdle to learning is a lack of background knowledge and understanding of global events, history, and cultures beyond their own. To curb this, I often use novels and picture books to teach concepts and relate their own experiences to local events, history, and their future life choices. My students love learning through picture books and novels, because they are engaging, funny, and relatable.

My Project

I will use the picture books "The Recess Queen" and "Enemy Pie" to aid class discussion of relatable social issues and to form connections between personal experiences, curriculum, and various texts. My students will see examples of professional writing, research, and various genres in the animal diary books and use them as inspiration for their own writing. We need 32 copies of "Inside Out and Back Again" so that we can learn and practice core literary techniques as a whole group. This particular novel deals with many issues that my students can connect with, as it is about war refugees, immigration, and the learning of new languages. In addition, it discusses historical events, cultural traditions, and racial strife that many are unaware of. Reading this novel connects my students as a group and allows them to reflect personally upon their own families' stories of coming to America and their role in making our country a better place for all of its citizens.

Donations that fund this project will make a difference by putting quality books into the hands of students who may have very few positive experience with books so far.

In teaching with these particular books, I have seen my students' opinions on social and local issues increase and their understanding of their own importance in crafting their future and community deepen. I have seen passion for reading form as my students have come into contact with these books and others like them.
