Inspiring Reluctant Readers

My students need 12 graphic and teen fiction novels, including "V For Vendetta", "Persepolis" and 5 books by Sharon M. Draper.

I teach at a small K-8 school in Denver, CO. The school has a diverse student body representing over fifty countries (1st and 2nd generation immigrants). We are a Core Knowledge school, offering a rigorous, content-rich curriculum. I teach 7th and 8th grade Language Arts and Social Studies.

Balancing diversity and the advanced curriculum can be challenging. In order to ensure that the curriculum is accessible to all students, I have attempted to offer a variety of books (teen, graphic novels, urban, the classics) to cater to individual student interests and needs during independent reading time. Developing independent reading skills is a priority. At the beginning of each day, each student participates in D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read), a "quiet time" where every student reads silently.

This was my first year at the school. Thanks to numerous additions to my classroom library (made possible by DonorsChoose grants) my 7th graders read hundreds of books during their D.E.A.R. time. A number of my students earned top scores on their Accelerated Reader tests based upon the books that they were/are reading. My proposal is for graphic and teen novels that will help to spruce up my classroom library. These books will help to entice a handful of "reluctant" readers. I have selected a variety of books based on student interests and reading levels in my diverse classroom.

Please help me start next year's D.E.A.R. time off with a BANG! The students will be very excited when they return from the summer to see a classroom library filled with many interesting titles.
