Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my school come from many different backgrounds, yet they all have one thing in common: they are experiencing music for the first time at this school. I want to inspire my students to continue participating in music using bucket drumming.

Many of my students speak English as their second language.

Many are Burmese refugees. Many have very difficult home lives. However, through the challenges that my students have, they have learned to be respectful leaders here at my school. The students really love the school, which makes it an incredible place to teach. Because my middle school students will be going to high school soon, I want to send them away with a very memorable experience in their first year of music classes. I want them to choose to have other musical experiences in high school and hopefully participate in music throughout their lives.

My Project

My vision is that with these buckets and drumsticks my students will learn a choreographed drumming piece that they can feel proud of and perform at the end of the school year. Students will learn basic rhythms through drumming. They will get to practice working together, as this piece requires it in order to work. Students will learn drumming technique that they can use in the future if they choose to learn more percussion.

Middle school students can be challenging to inspire.

I've found that this is something they are very excited about, and I want to use that to inspire them to pursue more music in the future. I think that music is something my students need to express themselves throughout their lives. I want them to know that they can succeed in it.
