My Project
In my high school cartooning class, I aim to empower students to create characters and storylines that speak to their personal experiences and interests. To achieve this goal, I am seeking funding for a carefully curated set of graphic novels that showcase diverse characters, complex themes, and innovative storytelling techniques. These books will serve as exemplars for my students, demonstrating the power of visual narratives to explore identity, culture, and social issues.
Graphic Novels offer a unique vehicle for fostering empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of diverse experiences while also providing a resource for building the technical skills of character design, art styles and narrative approaches.
Access to high-quality, diverse graphic novels, can inspire student creativity and self-expression and will better equip my students to tell their own stories authentically. This year, my students are collaborating with a Kindergarten class at a neighboring school so I am also ordering a few titles that my students can read and explore with their Kindergarten buddies as well. Through self study and reading aloud with their buddy I hope that these novels reveal the true power of comics to foster connection and understanding.
My class is made up of a diverse array of backgrounds that have not always been equally represented in traditional media. The requested collection includes titles such as "American Born Chinese" by Gene Luen Yang, which explores cultural identity; "Ms. Marvel: No Normal" by G. Willow Wilson, featuring a Muslim superhero; and "March" by John Lewis, a firsthand account of the Civil Rights Movement. By exposing my students to this diversity in graphic storytelling, I aim to inspire them to create comics that are personally meaningful and reflective of their own unique perspectives.
