Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am proud to teach first grade at a Title I elementary school. It is a small school, located in the north-east part of Albuquerque, New Mexico, near the beautiful Sandia Mountains. The students at our school have had many generations of their families attend the school, which makes it a close-knit community. For example, the cheerful elderly gentleman down the road takes pride in having a photo of himself as a child still hung up in the front office.

Our school is special because it has a diverse population of families from many different cultures and backgrounds.

I believe it is important to incorporate each child's unique individuality into the class identity. This helps each student to be proud of who they are, and also encourages them to be open to the diverse cultures of their peers.

My students are a fun, high energy bunch, who learn best from being involved in hands-on activities.

All of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I am a first-year teacher, and all of my classroom materials are completely funded by myself and the generosity of others.

My Project

I like to incorporate each individual child's culture and passion into the classroom by doing "All About Me!" activities throughout the year. It is important for each student to take pride in their unique upbringing and individuality. This self-exploration can help students see the beauty in their culture, as well as being accepting of others.

 In order for each child to be able to represent themselves, I need several sets of multicultural skin color crayons, colored pencils, markers, puppet cutouts and construction paper for our many projects.

This set would be perfect! It also comes with a book called, The Colors of Us that talks about how our differences make us special. Any little bit helps! Thanks!
