My students at S. G. Intermediate School come from a diverse background and over 70 percent of the student population is free and reduced. Students come to school, for the most part, ready and eager to learn despite many of them dealing with traumatic situations within their homes and/or families. Our teachers do their very best to work with each and every child based on their academic needs. However, for many of our students, their social and emotional needs are interfering with their ability to stay in the classroom and learn.
My Project
My students need an iPad, iPad case, and headphones in our Mindful Moment Room! These items will allow for me to better accommodate the various needs of my students. Since many of my students are dealing with traumatic situations within their homes and/or families, they are not always able to stay within the classroom setting. In these cases, they are sent to the Refocus Room where their social and emotional needs can be addressed before their academic needs.
Students exposed to trauma may have difficulty paying attention, poor control of their emotions, impulsive behavior, and the inability to problem solve.
While in the Mindful Moment Room, students are provided a safe place to process their thoughts, feelings, and emotions with an adult in order to return to a regulated state. Once students are regulated, they are able to return to their classrooms and succeed. Every student processes differently which is why I am requesting an iPad and iPad accessories. This iPad will be downloaded with varying calm down and meditation apps such as Feel Electric, Breathing Bubbles, Calm, DreamyKid, Headspace, Positive Penguin, and Super Stretch Yoga to name just a few. I am excited about the varying mindfulness opportunities that my students will be exposed to through this project!
