My students need flexible seating, yoga mats, and fidgets in our "Refocus Room"! These items will allow for me to better accommodate the various needs of my students. Since many of my students are dealing with traumatic situations within their homes and/or families, they are not always able to stay within the classroom setting. In these cases, they are sent to the Refocus Room where their social and emotional needs can be addressed before their academic needs. Students exposed to trauma may have difficulty paying attention, poor control of their emotions, impulsive behavior, and the inability to problem solve. When students are supported by an adult they trust, their anxieties and fears are able to decrease. While in the refocus room, students are provided a safe place to process their thoughts, feelings, and emotions in order to return to a regulated state. Once students are regulated, they are able to return to their classrooms and succeed. Every student processes differently which is why I am requesting flexible seating, yoga mats, and fidgets. Physical activity and movement are essential for waking up the brain and enhancing one's mood. These items will serve as tools that will help students get their emotions and impulses back in check. When students know how to and are able to manage their emotions and impulses, they are able to function at their best.
