For me, it is imperative to instill and fuel a passion for science in each of my 6th grade students; however, our outdated, 8th grade science textbooks are working against me.
I teach 6th science to approximately 115 students at a Title I school in Arizona.
Due to a lack of funding, it is nearly impossible to attain new resources for our classrooms. My 6th graders are having a difficult time reading and comprehending the information in our science textbooks. They are beginning to lose interest in science due to the extremely dry presentation of the content they read. The textbooks are actually old 8th grade science textbooks from our middle school, which accounts for a large part of their struggle. My students would greatly benefit from content area books that are grade level appropriate and engaging.
My Project
The Max Axiom books I am hoping to receive for my classroom will provide scientific content in a cool new manner- through graphic storytelling! These books are extremely engaging and appeal to even the most reluctant of readers. In addition to students accessing the books during downtime, I would use these books to introduce new concepts in each of our units throughout the year. The fact that these books are graphic novels definitely piques the interests of students and will inspire students to pursue their scientific inquiries.
These books will make a difference in my classroom because graphic novels are very appealing to young adults.
When my students see the artwork on the covers, they will be curious about the contents of the books and want to read more. These books will be an engaging supplemental reading resource that improves scientific literacy and comprehension while reigniting the spark for science that we have been missing.
