I teach at a Title I school in Arizona where my students range from homeless to middle class. These children have been learning about cellular structure and function, heredity, as well as the different structures and functions of human body systems. In the past they have learned mostly from books and lectures, which can be difficult at their age (I most definitely could not sit still for that long). I want to be able to give them the opportunity to get up out of their seats and explore science; I want them to be able to touch and manipulate the things that they are so eager to understand. When you provide a child with different ways to learn, you will witness a greater joy and understanding of the subject. There is truly nothing better than a child who is engaged and excited to learn every day when they step into the classroom. To see and touch physical models of the subjects they are learning about would be so much more beneficial than only reading about them in books.
