Inspiring and Empowering Readers Through Literature!
Help me give my students a love of reading and learning through a variety of books such as mysteries, cultural fiction, graphic novels, novels in verse, and competition books for our annual Battle of the Books district competition.
My school is a Title I school that serves approximately 400 students in grades 6-8. One hundred percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and some have no permanent home. Despite this, my students work extremely hard to overcome the many obstacles that they face on a daily basis.
One of the best parts about my school is that we have such a diverse background of students.
Many might not come from a prosperous background, but they soak up every opportunity they have to learn, and this project will help the library gain materials that will help ensure all of my students have books in order find their love for reading.
My Project
Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to be read to aloud everyday than are children in families with incomes at or above poverty. Unfortunately, most of my students fall into this category. Many of them did not have the love of reading nurtured into them at a young age. Because of this, my school struggles with getting our reluctant readers into reading. The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. The problem that we face in my area is that studies have shown that 61 percent of low-income households have no books in their home for children to get access to and many do not have means to get to the public library.
Thankfully, as a school librarian, I know that it just takes one book for them to fall in love with and they will be a reader for life.
This is why this project will provide my students with a variety of new books to spark their attention. This will allow the library to provide books for my graphic novel lovers for those that love the visual aspects in books, diverse books so my students will see themselves in what they read, mysteries, and competition books for our Battle of the Books team. Unfortunately, statistics have shown that a vast majority of students who start out behind, stay behind, and many of those drop-out. I don't want my students to be part of that large statistic. It just takes one book to change a child's life. Help me make that change in my students' lives.
