This book has done so much more than teach reading skills. Through the story, students have learned to see beyond stereotypes and begin to accept each other's different backgrounds. They are thinking about how their actions and words affect others and are practicing empathy in ways that go beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become a time for conversation and reflection. Students discuss the choices characters make and the challenges they face. They are learning to think critically while also connecting the story to their own lives. Many have started sharing their thoughts and feelings more openly and listening to others with more understanding and care.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were quiet or hesitant readers are now fully engaged. They are discovering the power of stories to help them understand difficult topics, including loss and death, and to realize that these are part of life. The Outsiders has opened a door for students to have meaningful conversations and to grow into more thoughtful and compassionate people.\r\n\r\nThank you again for giving our students this gift.","fullyFundedDate":1755126024141,"projectUrl":"project/stay-gold-together/9492789/","projectTitle":"Stay Gold Together","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McKinstry","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10089965"},{"teacherId":2221865,"projectId":9191835,"letterContent":"Our classics section in the library was very worn and all of the books just looked outdated. These books are illustrated classics so the vocabulary and word count are very middle school friendly. It helps them to better understand the content of the book. I had so much fun getting my inner pirate going and putting together this fun pirate scavenger hunt for our special needs class. We learned about pirates and how some of the famous pirates were girls and how most of them didn't really burry treasure, and the treasure most pirates were looking for was supplies and food. We then got into character with our hats and followed the map and clues in order to find the treasure. I enlisted other members of our faculty to be stations and help them with the clues. We had to solve riddles, learn how to follow a compass, and then learn how to use a black light in order to find hidden numbers to get into the treasure chest. They found stickers, gold coins, and a pirate booty snack in the treasure chest. They were allowed to keep their treasure, along with their pirate hat and patch. I saw one of them walking to the bus wearing his patch still! Thank you for helping me provide this fun activity for them. I put a turn table on the bottom of it so my students can spin it to the area they need.\r\n\r\nWe also got several new manga and other books. One of my favorites and a favorite of my kids is Black Girl You Are Atlas. The cover is striking and reflects so many of our girls in my school. It is so important that my students walk in our library and see books that look like they are. It helps them feel seen and heard and that they matter. \r\n\r\nAnother favorite of ours is A Deathly Compendium of Poisonous Plants: Wicked Weeds and Sinister Seeds. I used these with one of our special needs classes. This class has some students who struggle with motor skills. With the Bee Bots, you code by pressing the arrow buttons on the device. I created several mats for the students to code the robot through. They had to figure out how to get their robot from one end of the maze on the mat to the other. This required them to think about the direction the robot needed to go for it's next move and how many paces to get there. The kids all had so much fun. One even took it to a whole new level by coding their robot to go back through the maze backwards. That is not a simple task because you have to critically think even more to get it to go through moving backwards the whole time. \r\n\r\nWith as much fun as we had with these Bee Bots, we are going to use them a few times a year and they are certainly going to be well used for years to come.
