Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my journalism class show a great deal of initiative and truly want to find ways to aid our society. Many have faced a multitude of obstacles in their lives but remain resolute in graduating, going to college, and truly living the American dream.
My students see journalism as an avenue to a better society and expose that which harms our collective human spirit.
We are a largely immigrant school, and many of my students arrived from nations where the concept of an independent press was/is foreign.
My students are passionate at reporting the news and writing editorials that can motivate and advocate for change. They are angered by the attack on the field of journalism and the false use of the term "fake news" when it is attached to reputable news agencies.
My Project
How does one inspire high school students to enter the field of journalism, a field that constantly seems to be on the attack? This project will culminate in students becoming better journalists and understanding the importance of the First Amendment.
This new graphic textbook covers the basics of media arts values and practice, and offers cub reporters a primer on the drama, adventure and ethical conundrums that make journalism rewarding and fun.
It is such a great book that each student needs one. Using ripped-from-the-headlines examples, this textbook will challenge students to engage with the big issues. The stories revolve around a diverse newspaper staff at an urban high school who find themselves in a series of teachable moments. Packed with reporting exercises and fundamentals of the craft, woven into engaging narratives, each comic also gives readers a look at the real-life event that inspired the tale.
At the end of the project, each student will create a presentation on a particular issue in journalism.
