Inspiring a Lifelong Love of Learning Through Books
My students need more books at their individual levels, especially nonfiction texts, as well as chart paper, pens, and an easel for our whole-group literacy lessson
"We have to make reading cool, both in and out of school," says Frank Serafini, in "Supporting Boys as Readers," from The Reading Teacher. In order to help my students believe reading is "cool," I need to provide my classroom with high-interest books that will engage and motivate readers.
I have a classroom of 32 third grade students with a wide range of levels and needs.
At this point in the school year, only 10 of my 32 students are at the third grade level benchmark. The school is in a high poverty area with many students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Many students don't have their own books to read at home, so they borrow books from my classroom library to read for homework.
My Project
I have a lot of active students in my classroom this year, particularly boys, and it is often difficult to engage them in literacy learning. I know that boosting my classroom library with high-interest nonfiction books and entertaining series books, like Ricky Ricotta the Mighty Robot and Captain Underpants, will give my students the choices they need and deserve to keep them motivated to read. Through the implementation of The Daily 5 literacy structure in my classroom, I am able to use "choice" as a method of encouraging independence and ownership in learning and, hopefully, in life. The added choices in my classroom library will support this structure and my students' learning.
Jacqueline Kennedy said, "There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world.
Love of books is the best of all." If I can instill a love of books and learning in my third grade students, I know that I am helping to open future doors for these children. Reading will take them to new places and pave the way to their future lives.
