Inspired TEDsters Want to Have the Freedom to Roam

My Students

“Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson. This year, my students will learn to harness this power as they practice speaking and listening skills.

My 9th graders entered my classroom with an openness to learn and to press themselves.

They come from a growing, suburban area in Utah and bring with them a variety of beliefs, cultures, backgrounds, and family dynamics. With more than 1,700 students enrolled, our school is bursting at the seams, so each student yearns to find his or her place in the community. My classes include many high achieving, honors students as well as students who struggle and have IEPs.

As a National School to Watch, we are trying a variety of strategies to find how to best help the students in our area. Our weekly PLC meetings help us monitor and celebrate our students' achievements. We thank you wholeheartedly for considering our project.

My Project

Later this school year, my students will work long hours to analyze TED talks, choose meaningful topics, research and write strong presentations, and practice, practice, practice to be prepared to present to their peers around the school.

As we watch example speeches, my students will notice that TED talk presenters have the freedom to walk around the stage and use natural gestures to make their speeches more engaging.

Similarly, this project would allow students to click through their slides from anywhere in the room and help them keep their focus on the content and delivery rather than on technical components. They will be able to master public speaking skills that will aid them in future careers and interactions with others. I am requesting Power Point remotes.
