My Students

A book can take you places if you let it. You can lose yourself in the story, but first you have to find yourself. You find a nice comfortable spot to settle down and relax, like a chair at the beach. My students would love a nice spot to relax with a book instead of sitting in hard plastic chairs.

Voracious readers have taken over my classroom.

Second graders are trying to out-read the third and fourth graders. Can you imagine trying to do that while shifting in your uncomfortable seat? My students attend an inner-city school in a high poverty area. Their opportunities to travel and explore the world are limited, but books take them places. They start asking questions and reading more books to find the answers. They are discussing possibilities and making big plans.

My Project

A few colorful pillows can transform a drab corner into a place to relax and enjoy an adventure into a good book. With these four vibrant pillows, my students can sink into a snug spot. They can discover how airplanes fly or fly on the back of a dragon. The possibilities are endless.

Encouraging dreams, sprouting new ideas, learning new and wonderful things, are all possibilities when reading a book, but first we have to pick it up.

That perfect spot makes it much more appealing.
