This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What book are we reading next?" That's what my students always ask as soon as we finish a novel together. They love our read aloud time, especially when they have their own copy of the book. Unfortunately, our book sets are rather limited.

My fourth grade students attend an urban charter school where over 90% of the student population receives free and reduced lunch.

The school is surrounded by several crumbling buildings and abandoned homes, but inside, the classrooms are bright and nurturing. Most of my students speak Spanish at home and because of this, reading and writing can be rather difficult subjects for them. In fact, nearly half of my students read below the fourth grade level. Despite their challenges, they are hard-working, well-behaved and love to laugh. My goal is for every one of them to increase their literacy skills and develop a love of reading.

My Project

Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" is a series of 13 books about three unlucky orphans who are pursued by their evil uncle, Count Olaf, for their enormous fortune. The books are dark, funny, suspenseful, and the children love them. For years, my students have enjoyed the first book immensely and beg to read the second one, "The Reptile Room," but we only have one copy. Over the years I have realized that students are much more engaged when they have a copy of the book in their hands, especially my more visual learners. Having a book for each student as well as the audio cd, narrated by the very amusing Tim Curry, would captivate their attention, improve their reading comprehension, and inspire a love of reading. We would use the books daily to record and analyze new vocabulary words as well as to improve the very important skill of summarizing.

The only place where many of my students are exposed to exciting and well-written literature is at school.

The more engaging the book, the more they want to read, and they then begin to see reading as a truly enjoyable experience. I know that with "The Reptile Room" I will be hearing the usual request: "Can we PLEASE read one more chapter?"
