Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I high school with hard-working students who are committed to their education and making contributions to their community. As teachers, we strive to make our school a supportive, encouraging environment where our students are excited to learn every day. I once read a quote that said, “A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are.” I want to enable students to see their potential and become lifelong learners.
We strive to enable our students (over 70% of the students qualify for free meals) to become future leaders that possess integrity, compassion, and a drive to make their communities better.
My colleagues and the leadership rave about how awesome our students are, which is one reason I chose to come here. This is my first year at my school and I am impressed by how helpful and courteous the students are. When I moved into my classroom in May, multiple students offered to help without being asked. The students were so polite and welcoming. I am excited to be here and I am so glad that I moved to this county.
My Project
Implementing labs is challenging when resources are lacking. Lab equipment and kits are expensive, as a result, our students have not had many lab experiences in their classes. Labs are crucial because they are hands-on, allow students to collaborate, and incorporate important skills such as problem-solving. Labs enable students to truly understand the content and several students have told me that the labs throughout the year helped them on their state test and inspired them to look into STEM careers.
This year we want to provide our students with more labs because we want to foster an appreciation for science, build up their critical thinking skills, and inspire the next generation of scientists.
Environmental science is one of the fastest-growing job fields and we need more students going into this field. In order to offer more labs, we need support to purchase lab kits such as Soil Productivity, Coriolis Effect, Atmospheric Circulation, Solar Water Distillation, Climate Patterns, and Species Distribution. We want to provide our students with engaging learning experiences that appeal to their curiosity and help them understand how science is important in everyday life. We hope that you will help us close the achievement gap and make science fun.
