This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students live in the Northeast area of Los Angeles, which has historically housed an ethnically-diverse, first-generation-bound population. Many students have parents who work two jobs, while others have taken jobs themselves. Despite all these obstacles, my students and their families do their best to take advantage of every educational opportunity that comes their way. My hope is always that my class provides them with a safe and welcoming environment in which they can be scientists and be free to learn from their mistakes.

My students have benefitted a lot from doing meaningful, hands-on activities and experiments, whole-class debriefs, and from spending most of their time in the classroom working with others.

Because we're a Title I school, and because the pandemic has made it so that each student should ideally have their own materials, I don't have enough financial resources to plan and facilitate a lot of actual experiments and engaging discussions. With the proper materials, I just hope to give my students a great welcome back to the school after such a difficult year and a half.

My Project

I'm hoping to help my students feel more safe with the current status of the epidemic by providing them with materials to protect them against the virus, such as hand sanitizer. Additionally, one of my goals has been to promote their wellness and mindfulness.

With the materials from this project, my students will have a dedicated space that will allow them to have flexible seating, games, and sensory options!

These materials are the first step at building this space and, with the help of my students' input, will only continue to grow.
