My students need butterfly larvae, insect specimens, books, stencils, counters, art activities, games and a microscope/slides so that they can learn all about insects this spring!
My students are four-year-old preschool students who are attending school full day. This is a new experience for all the students and families. They are in school for 7 hours a day. All students want to learn, laugh and play in school. The students who are attending school come from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. In addition, many of the students have diverse learning needs
Although there are many differences in language, culture and learning needs, they all have more in common than not: they love to learn, find joy in playing and have families who want to provide the best education for their children.
The love of school and learning should last well beyond preschool. Providing fun, caring, adventurous, exciting and hands-on experiences in these critical early years will set them off on the right foot to success and continued enjoyment in learning for years to come!
My Project
My students will begin learning all about insects when we return from spring break.
This is always an exciting time since we get to explore and view the life cycle of a butterfly with live caterpillars.
I love teaching the students all about the different insects that they encounter regularly outdoors such as ants, bees, grasshoppers, butterflies, etc. The microscope with slides as well as the speciments will allow my students to see close up examples of these insects and their body parts.
The assorted manipulatives, toy insects, and craft materials will allow me to incorporate insects into all areas of play such as the building area, the art area, science area, math area, and sensory bins.
