My Students

We learn best by doing and that makes all the more sense in Science class. Fourth graders make lots of observations which evolve into questions. Through inquiry-based learning, we work to find answers to these questions.

Our school is located in a large Midwestern city and serves students from a variety of economic backgrounds.

We are fortunate to have a world language program where students study a foreign language daily from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Like many schools, we have numerous students who are highly motivated and simply rely on the teacher as a facilitator and go on their way. Other students have a greater need for support. We work to meet all of these learning need via differentiated instruction throughout the English Language Arts and Math blocks. Over the past two years, we have worked to better align our curriculum from one year to the next in ELA and math. Our current focus is to move away from narrow textbook-based science instruction and open our science rooms to inquiry based learning.

My Project

As we shift to the inquiry-based learning model, it’s important that all students have access to the materials. The “Speed of Bubble” tubes will be used for lessons that lay a foundation for collecting data accurately and precisely. The bubble inside each tube travels at a constant speed where students will have the opportunity to collect data at different intervals. They will also be able to manipulate the angle of the tube to see how the speed changes based on the angle. Each tube’s bubble travels at a different speed so students will be able to conduct the experiment several times and compare their data with classmates’ data to look for accuracy. The blocks will be used for experiments that require students to change the height of a ramp in order to change the slope to study motion and forces. The spheres will be used for students to see how size and mass can impact the distance a slider car can travel. The resources will be used over several years.

Children learn best by doing whether they are doing something independently, with a partner, or a small group.

These materials will open up our science classroom by allowing students to “do” more. As students conduct experiments with these donations, they will see how their questions have meaning. These questions will lead to investigations and then to conclusions. Life is an open-ended question. We might as well start to prepare students for them through inquiry-based learning.
