Our school is located in the inner core of a major Midwestern US city. Our school serves 550 students from K -8th grade; the curriculum includes study of a world language starting in Kindergarten. Our students are strongly encouraged to develop the habits of independent, daily free reading. Many have become voracious readers who are eager to take their reading to a more competitive and social level. Between 20 and 25 of our 4th-6th grade students willingly meet weekly after school to discuss and research the themes in each of the 20 Battle of the Books (BOB) titles. For equity of access, we work each year to get multiple copies of the Battle of the Books titles so all students can check these books out of the library. Students become quite good at planning their reading and taking advantage of books when they are available. While some schools have trouble getting boys reading, our BOB group has always had a very strong complement of boys as well as girls.
