My Students

"Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of imagination." John Dewey. Fourth graders make observations which evolve into questions. When given the opportunity to explore these questions and search for answers, students learn so much more than what is provided in the textbooks.

We are fortunate to have a world language program where students study a foreign language daily from kindergarten through 8th grade.

Like many schools, we have numerous students who are highly motivated and simply rely on the teacher as a facilitator and go on their way. Other students have a greater need for support. We work to meet all of these learning need via differentiated instruction throughout the English language arts and math blocks. Now that our ELA and math curriculums are better aligned and address all learning needs, we are focusing to move away from narrow textbook-based science instruction and open our science rooms to inquiry based learning.

My Project

As we shift to the inquiry-based learning model, it’s important that all students have access to the materials. We are preparing for a unit on electricity and magnetism. For this unit to be hands-on and inquiry-based, we need lots of materials. We are fortunate to have a kit to support the unit, however, many of the items have worn out and need to be updated. The copper wire, connector leads, and batteries will allow students to build simple and complex circuits. The leads have alligator clips which better connect to the battery holders and bulb holders. This eliminates students wasting time in setting up their circuits and allows them time to focus on how it works. The copper wire will be used for students to create electromagnets where they will be able to control the flow of electricity to “turn-on and turn-off” a magnet. Most of these resources will used over several years.

These materials will open up our science classroom by allowing students to “do” more.

As students conduct experiments with these donations, they will see how their questions have meaning. These questions will lead to investigations and then to conclusions. Since life is an open-ended question, we might as well start to prepare students for them through inquiry-based learning.
