Innovative Ideas for Interactive Word Walls

Help me give my students the tools to create interactive word walls! Scissors and index cards allow students to create visual definitions that are hung on a shower curtain backdrop with brightly colored tape.

My Students

My students are full of G.R.I.T.--gumption, resiliency, integrity, and tenacity! My students are my family, and I want them to be successful, in science and in life. It is my goal to inspire each student to become an independent, lifelong learner capable of critical thinking and great achievement. I want every student to realize that they can find success in what they do and that no achievement is small or insignificant.

Students love exploring, experimenting, and engaging.

Many of my students are identified as having a learning disability, dyslexia, or other health impairments that have to be overcome in my classroom. New ways of building excitement in the classroom have to be introduced so that every student comes to school ready to learn. Items as simple as colored pens, markers, bright neon paper, and cardstock can help students become more engaged in the classroom.

My Project

Vocabulary is key to understanding science concepts. Interactive word walls provide students the opportunity to engage in their own understanding of science terms and concepts. Interactive word walls allow students to build a visual area to study vocabulary, but with four sections of students it is difficult to organize without the proper materials.

The materials you are providing my classroom will increase student engagement and understanding of science vocabulary.

A white shower curtain becomes a backdrop, displaying science concept learning standards, headings, and categories. A clear shower liner becomes a canvas to display student work. Students will use the scissors and index cards to create visual representations of science terms and concepts. Students will create diagrams, visual definitions, charts, and tables. This area will become our interactive word wall: student created, student led, and student centered.
