Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been trusted to educate and serve 22 students who even though come from a low-social economy, they arrive to school each day ready to read, write, work on math activities as well as learning through playing in the pretend and learn center. At such an early age, my students will benefit from preschool despite being at-risk due to their social economic status. Our school family nurtures a safe and welcoming classroom environment where each student is inspired to learn.
My Project
Each morning, my 3 and 4 year old pre-K students enter the classroom waving a dollar bill as they state, “I’m going to buy ice cream.” They touch, look, and play with their dollar bill, but shortly after; they misplace their money. As a result, I find it necessary to begin providing a purposeful Financial Literacy Unit that is catered to meet the financial needs of preschool through dramatic play.
When the students are engaged in dramatic play such as creating a bank, a restaurant and a grocery store in the classroom, the students can learn to distinguish between wants and needs and identify ways to establish income.
The literacy books such as Little Critter: Just Saving My Money will help the students identify the importance of saving their dollar bill instead of buying ice cream every day. By having the Large Calculator Cash Register, the students can make pretend they work at a grocery store so they can learn the value of earning a dollar. In addition, the students need to identify numbers so the textured Touch and Trace Cards will help as a hands on learning tool. I also need Epson printer ink to print classroom materials. Every item listed will play an important role to help innovate the minds of our preschoolers.
